What does the name “Somatic Serf” mean, anyways?

I picked the name for this blog based on the combination of the words “somatic“, which is “relating to the body, especially as distinct from the mind” and “serf“: meaning “a person held in bondage or slavery” which I feel like is a pretty good descriptor for how I’ve felt for most of my life; having reactions to situations without knowing why, and it’s also how I feel most of the time throughout this healing process as well. It’s like my body as a whole is enslaved to my brain (and thus, emotions and intrusive thoughts) and the traumas stored within.

Sometimes, it really feels like I am truly indentured to my brain and body’s autopilot mechanisms.

Apropos indeed.
